Delhi Winters

During one of my catch up conversations with a friend who recently moved to Canada, I was a little taken aback when he started telling me how he genuinely missed Dilli ki Sardi (Delhi Winters) and that Canada winters were nothing compared to this.

To put it in perspective, Canada, as of today, is - 3°c and Delhi is 1.5°c.

For people who know me very well, know that I don't like and cannot stand winters. The unnecessary layering of clothes, introduction of cold, cough and headaches throughout the season that will last till March, the inability to do a simple thing because your blanket is too cozy, not getting enough sunlight, the water being icy cold.. you get the gist, right? I could go on and on.

So yes, I was confused why this guy living in minus degrees with snow all around thought that Delhi winters are worse? And somehow missed them too? :p

This got me thinking.

And after a lot of shower thoughts, I slowly realised that it's not just the seasonal change that people look forward to.

It's the garam chai at every chai break in office (and even at home) where you get that perfect adrak chai, it's the cozy blankets that do not let you get out of bed, it's eating Momo, and slurping your soup to keep yourself warm, it's the excitement to wear your scarves and gloves and boots and all thing wintery, it's shaadi season, it's mummy making pakore and paranthe with extra ghee, it's Diwali+Christmas+Eid+New Years, it's all the celebrations with family and friends, it's also the Bhaiya who stands at the sidewalk selling roasted peanuts, popcorn and that special biscuit/cookie you only get in winters, the strangers who invite you to join the bonfire to get a little warmth at night, it's the picnics in the parks to soak in all the sun on a cold winter morning, and the hugs that you share with your loved ones that exude warmth like nothing else.

Delhi Winters might be hard and cold and will 10/10 not let you do anything productive.

But it sure does bring the warmth in.

It's no wonder then, that people miss Dilli ki Sardi. :)
